I believe I am not abnormally special in the sense that I too, know people whom appear glossy and wonderful on the outside, yet their true character is seen by others, even when I think no one but I notice. The truth of the matter is: Everyone sees your heart. Think on that for a moment and then read it aloud: Everyone sees your heart.
I personally can attest to fairly recent circumstances in which I thought I was special. I thought “I” was the only one that saw reason for concern in someone elses personality. This particular individual in my story, seemed untouchable. On the public front, in the eyes of the general public this person, who for the sake of our story we’ll name Mot; “appeared” upstanding, intelligent, authoritative, mature. Mot acts the part of someone full of integrity, faith, and leadership; yet act is the keyword here. After a short period of time knowing Mot, the glossy surface began to wear off. You could say “the honeymoon was over.” We’ve probably all experienced such a circumstance in which after getting to know someone, they aren’t the person we thought they were. Thus repeat to yourself: “Everyone sees your heart.”
The thing I quickly learned after taking time to retrospectively review the person, and the situations leading up to my revelation on Mot allowed me to deduce Mot’s heart is not, nor could not be filled with the upstanding nature, intelligence, authority and maturity I originally thought when I first met Mot. Mot’s heart was, and still unfortunately is tarnished with ugly things that deep down Mot knows are there. I would be willing to wager Mot is even tormented by the ugliness in his heart. What a horrible place to be!
Fortunately for me, and for you, people are generally smarter than we give them credit for. Others that knew Mot also were able to see the deficiencies in his character and heart, much to the same degree I saw! It’s astonishing really. For the longest time, I thought maybe “I” had ill will towards Mot, and it was “just me” that thought Mot was lacking in the character and personality he so desperately wants everyone to see.
I saw things that behind the scenes that Mot did, on a consistent basis that did not match up with the public image Mot wanted everyone to see. Things like deception, outright lying, thievery, arrogance, boastfulness are just a few of the negative marks Mot still possesses today that he certainly doesn’t want the public to see. I thought I was special, because I had a backstage pass to Mot’s life outside of the public spectacle. I consistently witnessed all of the negative things previously aforementioned, on an increasing level as time went on with Mot. It was alarming to me! Here is this guy that puts on this persona of greatness and wonderful public character, yet thats not who he is at all, and I thought no one saw it but me! But, as much as Mot continued (and still continues) to try to hide his heart, everyone sees your heart. Everyone sees Mot’s heart for whats in it.
Once things had brewed to a point of where I wondered if Mot was in this protected class which hid his true personality, others started coming forward asking ME if I noticed irregularities much like I had witnessed and had concern for. Isn’t that interesting? Mot and I are in the same profession and occasionally bump into each other (figuratively) via professional connections. Highly regarded industry leaders were commenting to me, without any prodding, that they observed the same questionable items from Mot, that I, and others had seen. More interestingly, many of these professionals have had less of an inside peak to who Mot really is than I have. Yet, they saw it, and nailed that bullseye from a thousand meters away.
For Mot, his heart truly is in self worth, personal gain, proving to others he is a “winner”, etc.. What WE ALL saw, and still see, is a mirror image of what his heart feels for. Mot by my best assessment grew up in a small town setting in which he wasn’t seen as spectacular. Mot has no real athletic abilities, or other abilities that might have gotten him noticed growing up. Growing up, even thru college, it’s fairly clear Mot never really identified his true calling on this earth. Mot often talked about his “rich uncle” and his highly successful businessman father, both which no one has been able to validate as true stories. More than likely, these “highly successful” individuals Mot spoke so highly about are images of what he hoped himself to one day become. Mot clearly lacks in people skills and relationship skills. One can easily tell he was the “nerd” growing up, and today still is. His presence is one of extreme uncomfortable’ness even around people he knows well. Lacking in self confidence, and a true heart, Mot invested himself in education. This may have not been a bad investment for Mot had Mot already gained some level of self worth along the way. Mot, today who is decently well educated, is the epitome an elitist who believes his formal education surpasses the intelligence of any other human being. He undoubtedly carries a thesaurus in his work bag, along with the book 1,001 famous business quotes that were used all to often to hide personal shortcomings.
Now I realize at this point it would appear I’m being hypercritical of Mot. Surely Mot isn’t like this or that bad? I tell you truly, this is Mot, and I wager Mot is no different than other fake people you detest. Mathew 6:21 says: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Like other un-genuine individuals, their heart is filled with the wrong treasures. Often those treasures include: wealth, power, authority. Come to think of it, it sounds like what every politician has in their heart! The in-genuine are not dumb; they too know it’s “socially unacceptable” to desire wealth, power, and authority. Our media has determined these things are all bad for us, and will likely cause cancer! So the un-genuine learn to mask their heart with pretty little flowers that society tells us are socially acceptable things. Try as they may, their actions speak louder than their skill at masking their desires.
The outcome of this story is Mot’s personal morale failures have, and continue to cost him dearly. Enough people have seen thru the mask and identified his true character that it’s morbidly damaged his reputation. His enterprise is in a crumbling disarray, and even close personal relationships Mot used to enjoy have been irreparably damaged. Mot doesn’t know it yet, but there will be a day when he too chooses to put down the lies and deception, and begin building a life of character and genuineness which must begin in his heart. For Mot’s sake, I hope there is enough stamina left in his broken heart and mind to recover and build a life on a solid foundation.
Now everyone enjoys a good story of how the bad guy eventually got crushed. Mot is that story still in the making. However, there is more to this discussion of the heart. I ask YOU, what is in your heart? Don’t give me those socially acceptable, feel good responses that you read or heard about on Dr. Phil. What is really in YOUR heart? What mark do you want to make on this earth through your life? This is a harder question isn’t it? There is an easy answer to this. Look at your actions in important events. Or if you are afraid to think retrospectively, ask a real friend or family member; the kind that will tell you the truth even if its not the answer you were hoping for. Actions define whats in your heart better than you can put on paper or spew out of your mouth. Is the man who wishes to walk in integrity doing so when faced with uncomfortable situations? Is the mother who desires to be a caring & supportive wife exhibiting these traits continuously towards her husband? Do the actions line up with the desire? For if they don’t, the heart is not aligned with the mind and they require a re-syncing of the two components.
At this point hopefully you too have begun to dig into whats in your heart, as I am while writing this article. Make it a daily point to check in with yourself and determine if what you desire FOR your heart, is aligning with WHAT your heart does via actions. Make certain to hold yourself accountable here. You will make mistakes, and the alignment will not be perfect. Correct the mis-alignments and re-assess your actions time and time again for congruency. These are the steps Jesus himself gave to many hungry followers while on his walk on earth. If you’ve studied Jesus’s teachings, you know that the most often taught subject by Jesus were heart issues. Maybe the son of god might have a thing or two to teach you about your heart? Would some bible reading benefit you like I know it does me, and millions of others?
Lastly, never forget to tell yourself time and time again: Everyone sees your heart! Build the heart you want to be known for!
